Gentlemen, start your engines. RM Tracking, the platinum sponsor of the New England Rally, will install its RMT Rover GPS devices to allow the rally to be tracked live.

“In the real world, if you’re following a car rally, once the cars whiz past you, you’re essentially done,” says Brad Borst of RM Tracking. “But with our Rover tracking devices and our live progress maps and reports of the Rally on our web site, fans can support their team every mile of the way.”

The New England Rally, which begins on October 6, 2006, at Salisbury Beach, will travel 1,500 miles and through six states over the course of three action-packed days. The teams draw a card at each checkpoint, and the team with the best poker hand at the end of it all is crowned rally champion. The Rally ends in Laconia, NH, on October 8.

RM Tracking has teamed up with KORE Wireless and Locatient to sponsor the Rally. Thanks to the power of RMTracking’s Rover GPS devices, rally enthusiasts and even administrators can now follow and track the New England Rally live on the RM Tracking web site (available online at the official Rally web site (available at http://www.newenglandrally.com). Updates are available at fifteen-second intervals, so the Rally can be tracked virtually as it happens.

“Our association with the New England Rally proves yet again how versatile and powerful our GPS tracking solution is in a range of diverse fields,” says Borst. “We’re thrilled about this association, and we look forward to a thriving, adrenalin-filled Rally.”

Over 40 million Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers were shipped in 2005, but in 2011 the market will have grown to nearly 300 million shipments, according to a new study from ABI Research that tracks GNSS markets across eleven vertical industry segments.

That growth will not occur evenly across the board. In 2005, in-vehicle navigation systems accounted for just 26% of the total shipments, but 34% of worldwide GNSS hardware revenues. In 2011, in contrast, in-vehicle navigation shipments will represent just 16% of the total market, but will still deliver 29% of the hardware revenue.

Research director Frank Viquez says that the most significant trend, however, is the growing importance of the communications sector, almost entirely made up of GPS-enabled handsets. “In 2005, communications accounted for 43% of the total market in terms of shipments. In 2011 that will have grown to 69%, but the revenue derived from it will have doubled, from just 9% in 2005.”

Much of that added growth will come from the mass uptake of GNSS services by the majority of the world’s mobile subscribers who use GSM handsets. As that trend develops, the fastest regional growth, which until now has been seen in North America and parts of Asia, will shift to Europe.

While communications will be the standout, and portable navigation–buoyed by falling prices and a flood of new offerings–will remain a strong and popular application, other sectors will show more modest gains. Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, Thales, Trimble, and more specialized GNSS vendors such as Rockwell Collins, Leica, and Honeywell will see a variety of expanding opportunities.

“Military applications will increase,” says Viquez, “especially driven by the US military’s aggressive push to equip not just vehicles but individual soldiers with GPS. Civil aviation will see some growth due to the increasing popularity of regional commuter and executive jets. The deployment of the European Galileo GNSS satellites will boost mapping and surveying applications as well: the more satellites in the sky, the greater the availability of the signal, and the more accurate the location data it provides.”

“Global Navigation Satellite Positioning Systems and Devices” (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/market_research/Satellite_Positioning_Systems_and_Devices) examines all the end-use market segments for GPS/GNSS, and identifies individual market drivers and barriers for each. New for this year’s edition of the study is the inclusion of a comprehensive player profiles section. The study forms part of two ABI Research Services, Automotive Infotainment (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/service/Automotive_Infotainment_Research_Service) and Commercial Telematics(http://www.abiresearch.com/products/service/Commercial_Telematics_Research_Service).

Rocky Mountain Tracking has just introduced a new GPS tracking solution for vehicles that provides comprehensive real-time positioning information and services, including geofencing, optimal routing, close and rapid vehicle tracking, and customization. I’m seriously considering adding this to my new 2006 Chevrolet pickup, as it would be great to be able to track where my truck is at all times–and what’s really going on, especially when my wife takes it out for a joy ride (I’m just kidding, Debbie!).

What’s really cool about this new system is that you can access information about the position and status of your truck in real time; it uses wifi, cellular and satellite packet data services over 802.11x, GSM, CDMA, GeoSync Satellite, and Low Earth Orbit Satellite services.

“Logistics is a finely calculated trade today, and shippers need to constantly be aware of where their cargo and vehicles are,” says Brad Borst, President of RMT. “Our new solution provides a host of GPS tracking services, all in real time and all accessible online.”

The GPS tracking software can be accessed from virtually any computer with an Internet connection, and it has been designed to facilitate in multi-tasking applications. The features of the software include geofencing, optimal routing, close and rapid vehicle tracking, and customization.

“Our team has special expertise in moving information wirelessly – across town or around the world – using WiFi, cellular and satellite packet data services over 802.11x, GSM, CDMA, GeoSync Satellite and Low Earth Orbit Satellite services,” says Borst. “Our mapping is based on GIS systems, such as, ESRI ArcGIS MapInfo/MapX and to consumer oriented mapping products such as Microsoft MapPoint to develop web-based and desktop applications.”

The vehicle tracking hardware itself provides accuracy of between 3 to 16 feet, and it weighs only 4.5 ounces. Yet this device can transmit a host of data, including not only position but also excessive speeds, excessive idle times, lockdown violations, possible thefts and fleet activity.

“RMT Rover is the ideal tool for vehicle owners and shippers, allowing them to stay on top of their property at all points of time,” says Borst. “The constant information flow will afford them a peace of mind that would not be possible otherwise.”
